“Mopla rebellion” , you must’ve heard about this so called rebellious act of retaliation by the moplas against British and the hindus who were in favour of british. Was it really the rebellious? Or was it barbaric massacre which was concealed because of “secular nature” of Indian leaders? Let’s have a look, its gonna be a long read so one tiny spoiler for y’all- — The correct name of this incident would be“Mopla genocide of malabar hindus”.

Backstory

The history of moplas can be traced back to 8th-9th century. Malabar coast of kerala had this thriving business with arabs, over the centuries malabar hindus were either forcibly converted to islam or many arabs started marrying hindu women. Over the centuries these parasites spread their legs all over kerala. There was lot of plundering, abduction and rapes of hindu women major reason behind it being wicked nature of tipu sultan( there is need of separate article for this devil). These inhumane acts didn’t stop there, rather it was a beginning of some vicious incidents hindus were going to face.

What triggered agitation ?

Partition of Turkish ottoman empire into Yemen, Syria, Lebanon after first world war caused a lot of agitation all over the world among Khalifas /Caliphates as this caliphate empire which was 400 year old came to an crashing end. Although whole muslim population denied caliphate empire in syria, Lebanon region, there was restlessness among Indian muslims because of their loyalty towards khalifa or caliphate empire. So in year 1919, Md. Ali Jouhar lead a delegation to london and demanded for restoration of Caliphat empire, obviously colonial british who themselves were leeches tossed their demands into the trash, this triggered him and they established an committee known as “The khilafat committee” and this is where it all started. They did retaliations against british government and kept demanding restoration of Caliphat empire, that’s it, their only motto was to restore their own empire and they didn’t bat an eye against the same government to free India from the british unlike what our ‘history books’ tell us. There was no nationalist, patriotic instinct behind establishment of khilafat committee. Ali brothers were front line people of this movement. These are the same people who were pioneers of AIM which was one of the league responsible for partition of India.

What nurtured transformation of this committee into the movement ?

When established it was just a committee, but soon it turned into a nationwide movement due to unconditional support of mohandas karamchand gandhi yes the same person we consider as father of our nation. Now ali brothers had immense power in India including support of muslims which was already there and support of hindus who were blind followers of gandhi. I’ll write about gandhis contribution in massacre of malabar hindus in next article because that needs some particulars to be mentioned.

Aggression.

Soon enough after collaboration with gandhi ali brothers got aggressive about their primary goal. They extensively started public meetings, conferences, highly provocative public speeches in order to provoke muslims to restore the caliphat empire or khilafat. They literally went door to door, threatning people to join their league and were successful on large scale due to terror which they had. Following is an incident mentioned by C. Shankaran Nair who has covered all this khilafat extensively — Malegaon, Maharashtra -1920 A mob assaulted all the police in malegaon, killed a sub-inspector and threw his body into fire, those who opposed khilafat were looted, killed(they didn’t even spare children), women were raped, temples were burned, hindus had to flee. Same incident happened at multiple places like Barabanki (Uttarpradesh).

You might be aware of the fact that tipu sultan wrote an open letter to afgan king zaman shah to invade hindustan in the name of holy war, in one of his speeches md. ali supported the same war mentality and made an appeal to people to co-operate afgans if holy war occurs. Still you think khilafat was retaliation against britishers to free hindustan? There’s so much more to it that this might seem like a prologue.

Climax

Even if gandhi was blindly supporting ali brothers there were few hindus who saw right through their intentions. Malabar hindus had centuries of experience of living along with moplas, so they straight away refused to be incorporated into khilafat movement. So moplas declared war against malabar hindus.

Over the course of 2 years ali brothers had aggregated too much power in all parts of India, from malabar to bihar, from bengal to maharashtra they had followers in almost every region. After their arrest in 1921 due to hate speech against british government sparked a riot. Ali brothers were always preparing their followers for the war, they had weaponary, ammunation, knives, swords ready with them, but malabar hindus ? they were clueless and were caught off-guard.

Relentless, barbaric slaughter.

  • Mopla genocide of malabar hindus initiated on 20th August 1921,
  • It lasted for approximately 2 months.
  • Women were abducted and raped, they burned hindus alive, they didnt even spare infants.
  • They beat people and threw them in wells so that they would struggle and can do nothing except waiting for death to arrive.
  • Those who refused to convert met their ends horrifically. People were ordered to dig their own grave and were burried alive.
  • Looted all hindu houses, temples and worst part is even mopla women took part in this barbaric acts. They snatched away garments and belongings of other women, and handed them over to mopla men.
  • A 7 month pregnant lady was cut through her abdomen and she was seen lying dead with child which projecting out of the womb.
  • A baby being breastfed by his mother was snatched and cut before her eyes.
  • A lady was stripped naked in front of her husband and brothers and raped in front of them, they couldn’t even do anything as they were tied.
  • They slaughtered cows, they pulled out intestines of cows and hung them to murtis(statues) of Hindu deities. They hung skulls of cows in temples.
  • Whole non muslim population in malabar was almost extinct.

If you think I have exaggerated any of this here are some of the proofs.

We have been told that this was Mopla rebellion, Doesn’t your heart wrench from agony of our ancestors ? Who is responsible to hide the truth from us ?
